Cueva Pintada Museum (Gáldar)

One of the most significant archaeological sites in the Canary Islands, a state-of-the-art museum built around a natural volcanic cave whose walls are decorated with pre-Hispanic geometric paintings dating from between the 6th and 12th centuries CE. Discovered by accident in 1862 during agricultural work, the Cueva Pintada (Painted Cave) features a striking frieze of squares, triangles, and circles in red ochre, black, and white painted directly onto the volcanic rock — a unique example of ancient Canarian parietal art whose exact meaning remains a mystery. The museum, opened in 2006 after a major conservation project, encloses the entire archaeological site within a protective structure that allows visitors to view the cave from walkways and glass platforms without damaging the fragile paintings (viewing is through glass to control humidity and temperature). The site also includes an excavated pre-Hispanic village surrounding the cave, with reconstructed houses, storage areas, and streets that provide a vivid picture of Canarii daily life before the Spanish conquest. The museum's interpretation center uses multimedia presentations, 3D reconstructions, and bilingual panels (Spanish/English) to tell the story of the site and the Canarii civilization. Guided tours are available and recommended. The site includes a museum shop and a café. Open Tuesday–Saturday 10 AM–6 PM (extended hours in summer), Sunday 11 AM–6 PM, closed Mondays. Tickets: €6 adults, €4 concessions, free for children under 12. Tickets often sell out — advance booking online is strongly recommended, especially on weekends. Allow 1.5 hours. Located in the town of Gáldar, approximately a 30-minute drive northwest of Las Palmas. Gáldar itself is worth exploring — it was the pre-Hispanic capital of Gran Canaria (the 'Guanartemato de Gáldar') and features a beautiful neoclassical church (Iglesia de Santiago de los Caballeros, 18th century) built on the site of the former Canarii palace, with a striking black volcanic stone façade.
