Casa de Colón (Las Palmas)

A cultural institution housed in the former governor's residence of Gran Canaria, a complex of several 15th–16th century buildings in the historic Vegueta district surrounding a beautiful central courtyard with a well and palm trees. The museum's name derives from local tradition — Christopher Columbus stopped at Gran Canaria in 1492 during his first voyage to the Americas to repair the rudder of his ship 'La Pinta,' and it is believed he may have stayed at this house (though this is historically disputed). Regardless of the exact connection to Columbus, the museum offers an excellent exploration of the Age of Discovery, the Canary Islands' role as the 'stepping stone between Europe and the Americas,' and transatlantic maritime history. The ground floor features a replica of Columbus's cabin on the Santa María, period navigation instruments (astrolabes, compasses, quadrant), maps and charts from the 15th–16th centuries, and models of the three ships (the Niña, Pinta, and Santa María). The upper floors cover the history of Gran Canaria and the Vegueta district with period paintings, furniture, and decorative arts. The basement gallery hosts rotating contemporary art exhibitions from Latin American and Canarian artists. The building itself is a gem of Canarian colonial architecture with carved wooden ceilings, stone archways, and traditional balconies. Facilities include a library, gift shop, and a tranquil courtyard café. Open Monday–Friday 10 AM–9 PM, Saturday 10 AM–6 PM, Sunday 10 AM–3 PM. Tickets: €4 adults, €2 concessions, free on Sundays. Allow 1–1.5 hours. Located 3 minutes' walk from the Museo Canario — the two museums together form the perfect Vegueta-visit pairing. The surrounding streets of Vegueta are among the most atmospheric in the Canary Islands, with 500-year-old buildings, the stunning Santa Ana Cathedral, and the Plaza de Santa Ana.
