CAAM – Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno

The Atlantic Center of Modern Art, universally known by its Spanish acronym CAAM, is one of the most important contemporary art museums in Spain and the leading institution for modern art in the Canary Islands. Housed in a beautifully restored 18th-century building with a striking modern extension (glass, stone, and steel by architect Francisco Sáenz de Oíza), the museum is dedicated to exploring the connections between Europe, Africa, and Latin America through the lens of contemporary art — a mission that reflects Gran Canaria's geographic position as a cultural bridge between three continents. The permanent collection includes over 2,600 works focused on Atlantic-region artists from the 20th and 21st centuries, with notable holdings of Canarian artists (such as Manolo Millares, Martín Chirino, and César Manrique), Spanish post-war art, African contemporary art, and Latin American modernism. The temporary exhibitions change 3–4 times per year and are often accompanied by lectures, artist talks, and workshops. The museum also houses a specialist art library, a documentation center, and a bookshop with an excellent selection of art publications. CAAM operates a regular program of educational workshops for children and families. The museum is free to enter, making it one of the best-value cultural experiences in the Canary Islands. Open Tuesday–Saturday 10 AM–9 PM, Sunday 10 AM–2 PM, closed Mondays. Allow 1–1.5 hours. Located in Vegueta, within easy walking distance of the Museo Canario and Casa de Colón — the three together form a complete cultural circuit of the historic district. The neighboring streets have several excellent cafés and tapas bars for a post-museum refreshment.
