Mirador del Balcón (La Aldea)

Gran Canaria's most celebrated viewpoint — the 'Balcony' (Mirador del Balcón), also known as the 'Dragon's Tail,' offers one of the most unique and geologically dramatic sunset scenes in the Canary Islands. Perched on the GC-200 road on the island's wild west coast, this glass-walled viewing platform juts out over a sheer cliff above the Atlantic, providing a bird's-eye view of the coastline below where ancient lava flows have created a spectacular rock formation that genuinely resembles a dragon's tail plunging into the sea. As the sun sets in the west, the ocean-facing viewpoint is directly aligned with the setting sun, which sinks directly into the Atlantic on the horizon. The twisted volcanic rock formations of the coast below — millions of years of geological history exposed in the cliff faces — are illuminated in warm golden light, creating an almost prehistoric atmosphere. The viewpoint itself is an architectural highlight: a modern glass-and-stone cantilevered structure that feels as if it's floating above the abyss. The area is remote (a 1.5-hour drive from Las Palmas through spectacular mountain roads) — no facilities at the viewpoint itself, so bring water, snacks, and a jacket (it can be windy).
