Las Canteras / La Puntilla

A nightly ritual that defines Las Palmas life — the sunset at 'La Puntilla,' the northern tip of Playa de Las Canteras, consistently ranked among the world's best urban beaches. As the sun sinks into the Atlantic at the western end of the 3 km beach, locals gather on the rocks, the promenade, and the beach itself with drinks, snacks, and often guitars to watch the spectacle. What makes this sunset special: on clear days, the silhouette of Mount Teide on Tenerife is distinctly visible on the western horizon (approximately 105 km away), its 3,715-meter peak framed by the setting sun. The natural rock barrier known as 'La Barra' (a volcanic reef running parallel to the beach) creates calm, glassy water that reflects the sunset colors like a mirror, with the Teide silhouette doubled in the reflection. The nearby Auditorio Alfredo Kraus and the peninsula of La Isleta frame the northern edge of the view, while the old town of La Puntilla with its colorful fishing boats adds local character. Bars and restaurants along the Paseo de Las Canteras promenade offer sunset-view terraces; the most popular spots fill up by one hour before sunset. Free access.
