Tamadaba Natural Park

Gran Canaria's wildest hiking territory — the Tamadaba Natural Park is a 7,500-hectare protected area in the island's northwest, dominated by one of the best-preserved natural Canarian pine forests (Pinus canariensis), precipitous sea cliffs, and a sense of remote wilderness that feels a world away from the southern resorts. The flagship hike is the 'Camino de los Romeros' to the Faneque viewpoint, an 8 km circular route (approximately 3.5 hours) that begins at the Área Recreativa de Tamadaba picnic area and climbs through ancient pine forest before emerging at the Mirador del Balcón (the balcony viewpoint over the Agaete Valley and Atlantic). The forest is magnificent — towering Canarian pines with their characteristic tiered branches, a soft carpet of pine needles underfoot, and the scent of warm resin in the air. The trail offers spectacular clifftop views of the coast where the pine forest literally meets the sea — the mountains plunge 1,000+ meters vertically into the Atlantic. For a shorter option, the walk from the picnic area to the Mirador de Tamadaba (1 km, 30 minutes) offers an accessible taste of the park's beauty. The park is also a key habitat for the endemic Gran Canaria blue chaffinch — one of Europe's rarest birds — and you may spot it among the pine trunks. Free access. The Área Recreativa de Tamadaba has parking, picnic tables, barbecues, and toilets — it's a popular weekend spot for local families. The road to the park (GC-200 from Agaete) is a winding mountain road with spectacular views. A 1-hour drive from Las Palmas. Best months: year-round, but the forest is particularly beautiful after winter rains when the pines are at their greenest and wildflowers carpet the clearings. Combine with a visit to the coastal town of Agaete and the natural saltwater pools of Las Salinas. For experienced hikers, the full traverse to the El Risco viewpoint and descent to the coast is a challenging full-day adventure. Tamadaba is Gran Canaria's answer to the enchanted forest — a genuinely magical place for walkers.
