Roque Nublo
Gran Canaria's most iconic natural monument — Roque Nublo (Cloud Rock) is an 80-meter-tall basalt monolith that stands at 1,813 meters in the heart of the island, a sacred site of the ancient Canarii people and the spiritual centerpoint of Gran Canaria. The most popular route to Roque Nublo starts from the car park on the GC-600 road (km 18) near the Degollada de La Goleta, a well-maintained 1.5 km path (3 km return, approximately 1–1.5 hours) with 200 meters of ascent that winds through Canarian pine forest before emerging onto the rocky summit plateau. As you climb, the views open up to an extraordinary 360-degree panorama: Mount Teide on Tenerife is visible on clear days across the ocean to the west; to the south stretches the entire Maspalomas coastline; to the north and east the volcanic interior of Gran Canaria unfolds in a landscape of ancient calderas, terraced valleys, and whitewashed mountain villages. The Roque Nublo itself dominates the summit plateau — a towering finger of basalt that was formed by volcanic eruptions millions of years ago and sculpted by erosion. The nearby Roque del Fraile (a squat rock formation that resembles a praying friar) adds to the spiritual atmosphere. The summit area is exposed and often windy — bring a windproof layer. The trail is well-signed and popular; arrive early (before 9 AM) to avoid crowds and the midday heat. Free access. The small parking area at Degollada de La Goleta fills quickly — overflow parking is available along the roadside. The village of Tejeda (10 minutes' drive), voted one of the prettiest in Spain, is the perfect post-hike stop for almond-based pastries ('bienmesabe') and local cheese. Best months: October–June; summer can be very hot. The hike is suitable for most fitness levels, but the altitude means the sun is intense — hat, water, and sunscreen essential. A shorter alternative is the 500 m walk from the closer car park at the base of the summit plateau. Roque Nublo at sunset is a magical experience (bring a flashlight for the descent).
