Barranco de las Peñitas (Las Peñitas Ravine)

A scenic ravine near Vega de Río Palmas in the interior of Fuerteventura. The trail follows a stream shaded by Canary Island date palms (Phoenix canariensis) and tamarisk trees — a rare and precious oasis of green in the arid volcanic landscape. The path leads to the Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña (Hermitage of the Virgin of the Rock), a 17th-century chapel carved into the rock face and dedicated to Fuerteventura's patron saint. The chapel is a pilgrimage site, with the main festival celebrated annually on the third Saturday of September. The ravine offers one of the most tranquil and photogenic walks on the island, with opportunities to see local bird species including the Canary Island chat and Barbary falcon.
