Ajuy (Caves & Black Sand Beach)

A dramatic black sand beach on the west coast, backed by limestone cliffs and natural sea caves. The Ajuy Caves (Cuevas de Ajuy) are accessible by a wooden boardwalk trail from the beach and are part of a designated Natural Monument. These limestone formations are among the oldest geological structures in the Canary Islands, dating back over 100 million years — they were formed on the ocean floor before the islands even existed. The beach itself is a striking contrast of black volcanic sand against turquoise water. The village of Ajuy is small and traditional, with a few seafood restaurants overlooking the beach. Swimming is possible but be aware of strong currents.
