Casa de los Coroneles (La Oliva)

The most important historic building in Fuerteventura, an imposing 18th-century mansion in the small inland village of La Oliva that served as the seat of military and political power for the island from 1708 to 1859. The House of the Colonels was the residence of the Coroneles — the colonel-governors appointed by the Spanish Crown to administer Fuerteventura on behalf of the absent feudal lord (the island was, until the early 19th century, under a feudal 'señorío' system with the island effectively owned by noble families who never visited). The colonels held absolute civil and military authority, and the house was both their residence and the island's administrative center. The recently restored building (a 15-year €4.5 million restoration project) is a superb example of Canarian colonial architecture: a symmetrical two-story façade with a wooden balcony running the entire length of the upper floor, a large central courtyard (the social hub of the building), high-ceilinged reception rooms, a private chapel, and servant quarters. The restoration has recovered original 18th-century wall paintings and carpentry. The museum explains the unique history of Fuerteventura's feudal period, the colonels' roles, and the building's history through bilingual panels, period furniture, and multimedia displays. The rooftop terrace offers panoramic views of the surrounding volcanic plains, the nearby Montaña de Tindaya (the island's sacred mountain to the indigenous Mahos people), and the ocean in the distance. La Oliva was the island capital until 1860 when that role moved to Puerto del Rosario, and the village retains a quiet, authentic atmosphere with several notable buildings including the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria (18th-century church with a distinctive bell tower). The house also hosts temporary art exhibitions and cultural events. Open Tuesday–Saturday 10 AM–6 PM, Sunday 10 AM–2 PM, closed Mondays. Entry: €5 adults, €3 concessions. Allow 1–1.5 hours.
