The ultimate Fuerteventura hiking challenge — Pico de la Zarza (also known as Pico de Jandía) is the highest point on the island at 807 meters. This 14 km round-trip hike (approximately 5–6 hours, 800 meters of total ascent) starts from the trailhead near the village of Cofete on the wild west coast of the Jandía Peninsula and climbs through a dramatically diverse landscape of arid barrancos (ravines), weathered volcanic slopes, and increasingly sparse vegetation — cardones, tabaibas, and razor-sharp volcanic rocks — until reaching the summit ridge. The final section is a knife-edge ridge with the Atlantic Ocean visible on both sides of the Jandía Peninsula — a genuinely breathtaking moment as the vast beaches of Cofete and Barlovento unfold hundreds of meters below on the west coast and the tourist developments of Costa Calma and Morro Jable are visible on the east coast. On exceptionally clear days (most common in winter), the summit view encompasses the entire island of Fuerteventura trending northeast like a spine, the silhouette of Gran Canaria to the northwest, and the African coast of Western Sahara (approximately 100 km to the east) visible as a haze line on the horizon. The trail is well-marked but rugged — sturdy hiking boots are essential, and trekking poles are highly recommended for the descent (the loose volcanic scree on the upper slopes can be treacherous). There is no shade on the entire route, and the Jandía mountains are notoriously windy — bring at least 3 L of water per person, sun protection, and a windproof jacket. The trailhead is reached via the unpaved road from Morro Jable to Cofete (approximately 40 minutes on a rough dirt track — a 4x4 is not essential but provides more comfort; standard cars can manage with careful driving at low speed). Free access, no permits required. Best months: November–March (summer is dangerously hot for this exposed hike). Start early — 7 AM is ideal — to avoid the midday sun. Combine with a post-hike swim at the legendary Playa de Cofete (one of the wildest and most beautiful beaches in the Canary Islands, also accessed via the same dirt road). Pico de la Zarza is the definitive Fuerteventura mountain walk — demanding, remote, and immensely rewarding.
