Isla de Lobos
A pristine island hiking experience just a short ferry ride from Fuerteventura — Isla de Lobos (Wolves Island, named for the monk seals — 'lobos marinos' — that once lived here) is a 4.5 km² uninhabited islet and protected natural park lying in the Bocaina Strait between Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. The island is a hiker's paradise: a 13.5 km circular trail (approximately 3.5–4 hours) takes walkers around the entire coastline through a landscape of volcanic cones, salt marshes, sandy coves, and lava plains that feel a thousand miles from civilization. The main trail leads to the summit of the Montaña La Caldera volcano (127 meters), the highest point on the island, offering panoramic views of Fuerteventura's Corralejo dunes, Lanzarote's volcanic ridge, and the endless Atlantic. The island also features the unique Las Lagunitas salt lagoon, the 19th-century Faro de Martiño lighthouse at the northern tip, and the traditional stone cottages of the former fishing settlement at El Puertito, where fresh seafood can be enjoyed at the single, seasonal restaurant. Swimming at Playa de la Concha (a sheltered turquoise-water cove on the south coast) is the perfect post-hike reward. Access is by ferry from Corralejo harbour (15–20 minutes, approximately €16 return; book at the harbour kiosks). Entry to the island requires a free permit from the Cabildo de Fuerteventura website (book in advance — daily visitor numbers are capped to protect the ecosystem). The island has no shops, no accommodation, and limited shade — bring all food, water (minimum 2 L per person), sun protection, and sturdy shoes. The last ferry back to Corralejo is typically at 4 PM or 5 PM — check the schedule and plan your hike accordingly; missing the last boat means an expensive private water taxi. Best months: October–May (ferries may not run in rough weather). A pristine, windswept, and genuinely wild hiking experience — Isla de Lobos is Fuerteventura's must-do walking adventure.
