La Restinga Evening Bars

El Hierro's most charming and authentic evening destination — La Restinga is the island's southernmost village and its primary fishing port, known internationally as one of Europe's best scuba diving destinations thanks to the Mar de las Calmas marine reserve. The village's tiny harbor is lined with simple, unpretentious bars and seafood restaurants where the 'nightlife' consists of fresh-caught seafood, local Herreño wines, and conversation with friendly locals and divers from around the world. The scene is centered on the small harbor-front promenade — a handful of terraces serving grilled fish (vieja, cherne, tuna), papas arrugadas with mojo, and local D.O. El Hierro wines (made from Vijariego, Baboso Negro, and Listán Blanco grapes grown in volcanic soil). Popular spots include Bar El Refugio (diver hangout), Restaurante La Vieja (named after the local parrotfish), and several small harbor-side bars. After dinner, the evening typically continues with drinks at the same terraced bars — there are no nightclubs nor throbbing music venues. The atmosphere is what makes La Restinga special: international divers sharing stories of the day's underwater encounters (giant manta rays, turtles, whale sharks in season), local fishermen mending nets on the dock, and one of the darkest skies in Europe for stargazing after the bars close. The village is a 35-minute drive from the capital Valverde via the HI-400 road through volcanic landscapes. Combine with daytime diving (over 20 dive sites within the marine reserve), snorkeling, or hiking the Camino de la Virgen trail. Open year-round, busiest during dive season (June–October) and weekends. The village also hosts the annual 'Feria del Mar' (Sea Festival) in August with maritime-themed entertainment. Prices are very affordable (€1.50–2 beer, €4–5 cocktail, €8–15 seafood dinner).
