Valverde (Capital of El Hierro)

The capital and administrative centre of El Hierro, with approximately 5,000 residents (nearly half the island's total population). Valverde is unique among Canary Islands capitals — it is the only one not built on the coast, instead sitting at approximately 600 metres elevation on the north-eastern slope, 7 km inland from the port of Puerto de la Estaca. The altitude gives Valverde a distinctively cooler climate than the coastal areas, and the town is frequently shrouded in the trade wind cloud (known locally as the "donkey's belly" or panza de burro). The historic centre is grouped around the **Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción**, an 18th-century church built on the site of an earlier 16th-century hermitage. The church features a notable Mudejar-style coffered wooden ceiling. The modern **Cabildo Insular** (Island Council) building houses the island's government. Valverde offers the island's main services: the **Hospital Insular Nuestra Señora de los Reyes** (38 beds), several supermarkets, banks, pharmacy, and the bus station (TransHierro). Points of interest include the archaeological museum (Museo Arqueológico de El Hierro) and several miradores with views across to Tenerife and La Palma on clear days. Despite being the capital, Valverde retains the tranquil atmosphere of a small Canarian country town — the pace of life here is distinctly unhurried.
