Mirador de la Peña (The Peña Viewpoint by César Manrique)

An architectural masterpiece and one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the Canary Islands, designed by the legendary Lanzarote-born artist and architect César Manrique (1919–1992) and opened in 1989. Perched on the edge of the Risco de Tibataje escarpment at approximately 700 metres above sea level, the viewpoint overlooks the entire El Golfo valley — the massive semi-circular volcanic collapse amphitheatre that defines northern El Hierro. The building is a masterpiece of Manrique's integration of architecture with landscape, featuring volcanic stone walls, large panoramic windows, and a terrace restaurant where visitors can dine while enjoying what is arguably the most dramatic lunch view in the Canary Islands. On clear days, the islands of La Palma and La Gomera are visible across the Atlantic. The building includes a restaurant serving traditional Herreño cuisine, a café-bar, and a souvenir shop. Access is via the HI-500 road leading up from the El Golfo valley floor. Parking available. Open daily from 10:00 to 18:00 (restaurant hours may extend later).
