El Sabinar (The Wind-Sculpted Junipers)

One of the most extraordinary botanical sites in the Canary Islands — a grove of ancient Canary Island junipers (Juniperus turbinata ssp. canariensis, known locally as sabinas) that have been sculpted into surreal, twisted shapes by the relentless trade winds over centuries. Located in La Dehesa at the westernmost tip of El Hierro (and thus of Spain), these trees grow almost horizontally along the ground, their branches swept into aerodynamic forms that look like frozen wind. The site is a protected natural monument within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. A short, easy walking trail (approximately 1.5 km loop) with interpretive panels winds through the grove. The sabinas are exceptionally slow-growing — some trees here are estimated to be over 500 years old. The area also offers panoramic views across the volcanic landscape of La Dehesa to the Atlantic.
