Centro de Interpretación del Geoparque El Hierro (El Pinar)

El Hierro's UNESCO Global Geopark visitor center, an essential stop for understanding the island's extraordinary geology as the youngest and most geologically dynamic of the Canary Islands (estimated age: approximately 1.2 million years). The interpretation center, located in the village of El Pinar in the southern part of the island, uses modern multimedia exhibits, interactive displays, 3D models, and geological specimens to explain the forces that created El Hierro: shield volcano formation, the massive El Golfo landslide (approximately 13,000 years ago, one of the largest known landslides on Earth, which created the dramatic 15 km-wide El Golfo amphitheater on the north coast), the underwater eruption of 2011–2012 at the Tagoro volcano off the southern coast (which expanded El Hierro's territory), and the island's pioneering efforts to become the world's first 100% renewable energy island through the Gorona del Viento wind-hydro power station. The center explains why El Hierro, despite being the smallest Canary Island, has the highest density of volcanoes (over 500 volcanic cones on just 268 km²) and how this extreme geology shaped the island's unique ecosystems, agriculture, and culture. The visit provides essential context for exploring the island — visitors will understand the landscapes they see (the lava fields, the fertile El Golfo valley, the dramatic cliffs, the 'malpaíses' — badlands of rough lava).
