A fascinating scientific and conservation center dedicated to the critically endangered El Hierro Giant Lizard (Gallotia simonyi), a species found nowhere else on Earth and once believed to be extinct until rediscovered in 1974. The Lagartario (Lizard Center) is located in the hamlet of Guinea within the dramatic El Golfo valley on the island's north coast. The facility consists of outdoor enclosures recreating the lizards' natural volcanic habitat where visitors can observe these prehistoric-looking reptiles (adults can reach 60 cm in length) basking on rocks and feeding. The center plays a vital role in the species' captive breeding and reintroduction program, which has successfully brought the population back from the brink of extinction. Children are particularly fascinated by the 'mini-dinosaur' appearance of the lizards and the interactive educational displays explaining the conservation story. The visit includes a short guided tour (English, Spanish, German available) through the breeding and viewing areas. The adjacent Ecomuseo de Guinea (included in the same ticket) features a restored traditional Herreño settlement with volcanic stone houses, cave dwellings, and exhibitions about the island's pre-Hispanic Bimbache culture — including a demonstration area with live farm animals (Canarian goats, sheep, black pigs). The site offers combined family value: wildlife conservation education, live animals, archaeological interest, and dramatic volcanic scenery. The center includes a small café with snacks and drinks, a gift shop, and clean toilet facilities. Open Tuesday–Sunday 10 AM–5 PM (closed Mondays). Tickets: €8 adults, €4 children (6–12), free under 6. The combined entry covers both the Lagartario and the Ecomuseo. The site is a 25-minute drive from Valverde. Parking is free. Allow 2 hours for the full visit. Best visited in the morning when the lizards are most active in the sun.
