Ecomuseo de Guinea (Frontera)

An extraordinary open-air museum and restored traditional settlement located in the hamlet of Guinea in El Hierro's El Golfo valley, forming a single visitable complex with the Lagartario (Lizard Center) under the same ticket. The Ecomuseo preserves and presents over 600 years of Herreño history through authentically restored volcanic stone houses, cave dwellings dug into the mountainside, and working farm animal displays. The tour is divided into three sections: Phase I — a guided walk through the pre-Hispanic Bimbache cave settlement (natural lava tube caves inhabited by the island's original indigenous people, with recreated living spaces and interpretive panels). Phase II — the traditional Herreño village with restored houses from the 16th–19th centuries, furnished with period furniture, tools, and household items, demonstrating the self-sufficient lifestyle of El Hierro's rural communities before modernization. Phase III — a live farm animal area where children can see and interact with the island's heritage breeds: the Hierro sheep (a hardy local breed), black Canarian pigs, goats, chickens, and the iconic Hierro fighting cocks. The site features a working bread oven where traditional bread-baking demonstrations sometimes take place. The combination of cave dwellings (which children find magical), farm animals, and the dramatic volcanic landscape of the El Golfo amphitheater makes this a uniquely memorable family experience. The museum includes a café, restrooms, and a small shop selling local crafts and products (honey, cheese, wine). Combined ticket with Lagartario: €8 adults, €4 children (6–12), free under 6. Open Tuesday–Sunday 10 AM–5 PM. Allow 1.5–2 hours. The site is partially accessible for strollers. Parking is free. A 25-minute drive from Valverde through stunning volcanic terrain.
