Mirador de la Peña (César Manrique)
César Manrique's only architectural work on El Hierro — a beautifully integrated viewpoint and restaurant complex perched at 700 meters on the cliffs above the fertile El Golfo valley on the island's north coast. Built in 1989 using Manrique's signature philosophy of blending architecture into the volcanic landscape, the Mirador de la Peña is constructed from local stone and appears to grow organically from the cliff face. The main terrace offers a stunning 240-degree panorama: to the west, the El Golfo valley — a vast green amphitheater of banana plantations, vineyards, and fruit orchards created by a massive prehistoric landslide — sweeps down to the Atlantic coast; to the north and east, the Atlantic stretches to the horizon. At sunset, the western orientation of the mirador means the sun sets directly over the El Golfo valley, bathing the cultivated terraces, traditional farmhouses, and the distant coastline in warm golden light. The white curves of Manrique's architecture glow warmly in the fading light, while the interior spaces — with their large picture windows, volcanic stone walls, and minimalist furnishings — provide a sheltered viewing option. The on-site restaurant serves traditional Herreño cuisine (goat stew, fresh fish, quesadilla herreña — a local sweet cheese tart — and El Hierro D.O. wines) with sunset-view tables. The restaurant is popular — book ahead for a sunset table. The viewpoint also has a free viewing terrace for non-diners. Open daily 10 AM–6 PM (restaurant until 10 PM). Free access to the viewpoint; restaurant prices are moderate (€20–35 per person). A 20-minute drive from Valverde via the HI-1 road. The combination of Manrique's architecture, the dramatic geology of El Golfo, and the sunset makes this one of the most elegant and atmospheric sunset experiences in the Canary Islands. Combine with an afternoon exploring the El Golfo valley (visiting the Lagartario and Ecomuseo de Guinea) before ascending to the mirador for sunset dinner. A fitting end to a day exploring the island's wonders.
