Faro de Orchilla

One of the most historically and symbolically significant sunset locations in the Canary Islands — and arguably the world. The Faro de Orchilla (Orchilla Lighthouse) stands at the westernmost tip of El Hierro, which was considered the 'end of the known world' (the prime meridian, or Meridiano Cero) from the 2nd century CE (when the Greek geographer Ptolemy established it) until 1884, when the prime meridian was moved to Greenwich. For over 1,600 years, this remote headland was literally the edge of the map — the zero point from which all longitude was measured. A monument at the lighthouse marks the 'Meridiano Cero' (Zero Meridian). The sunset experience here is uniquely profound: standing at what was considered the end of the Earth, watching the sun sink into the vast, trackless Atlantic from the very edge of Europe, with no land visible between you and the Americas (the next landfall west is approximately 5,000 km away). The lighthouse itself (a 20-meter stone tower built in 1930, automated and still active) adds a classic maritime element. The surrounding landscape is starkly beautiful: an arid, windswept volcanic plain of red and black lava, with twisted juniper trees bent horizontal by the constant Atlantic winds. The silence (apart from the wind and waves) is profound. Access is via a well-paved road from the village of El Pinar (30 minutes) through the dramatic volcanic landscape of southern El Hierro. Free access and parking. No facilities — bring everything you need. The area around the lighthouse has several volcanic rock formations known as the 'Roques de Salmor' and natural lava pools. Best months: year-round (El Hierro has remarkably stable weather), but spring and autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures. Combine with a daytime exploration of the El Hierro UNESCO Geopark and the nearby El Julan archaeological site (petroglyphs). The combination of history, geography, and natural beauty makes this arguably the most meaningful sunset spot in the Canary Islands — a place to contemplate the edge of the world as the ancients understood it.
