Roque de los Muchachos
La Palma's highest point at 2,426m and home to one of the world's premier astronomical observatories — the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, operated by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC). The site hosts over 20 telescopes from 60+ international institutions, including the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) — the world's largest single-aperture optical telescope. The road (LP-4) is paved to the summit, making it accessible by car (check weather — can close with snow or ice in winter). The Mirador del Roque de los Muchachos offers spectacular 360° views including the Caldera de Taburiente, Tenerife's Teide, and La Gomera on clear days. The area is a Starlight Reserve with exceptional night sky quality.
