La Palma is one of the world's top three locations for astronomy, alongside Hawaii and Chile, due to its dark skies, high altitude, and stable atmosphere protected by the Starlight Reserve designation. The Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (ORM at 2,396m) hosts the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) — world's largest optical telescope at 10.4m — plus MAGIC gamma-ray telescopes, the William Herschel Telescope, and over 20 other instruments. Guided tours are available through the IAC visitor programme (must book weeks in advance). Astrophotography tours and stargazing experiences operate from various locations around the island. The Mirador del Llano del Jable and Mirador de los Andenes are popular public stargazing points.
