Southern Gran Canaria's iconic resort area, famous for the Maspalomas Dunes — a 400-hectare sand dune system designated a Special Nature Reserve since 1987. The dunes, formed by eroded coral and shell fragments, stretch for kilometres alongside the Maspalomas Lagoon (La Charca), a coastal saltwater lagoon that is an important bird habitat. The area includes the Maspalomas Lighthouse, dating from 1890 and still operational at 56 metres tall.
