Betancuria Valley

The historic heart of Fuerteventura, founded in 1404 by Norman conqueror Jean de Béthencourt as the island's first capital. Nestled in a palm-filled valley surrounded by volcanic mountains, Betancuria remained the capital until 1834. Today it's a small village of approximately 800 residents with a beautiful 17th-century church (Iglesia-Catedral de Santa María) featuring ornate Canarian-Mudéjar woodwork. The Archaeological Museum (Museo Arqueológico de Betancuria) documents the pre-Hispanic Majorero culture. The valley offers several hiking trails including routes to the Ajuy Caves and Degollada de la Presa viewpoint. Local restaurants serve traditional Majorero cuisine including goat meat and cheese.
