El Pinar

A municipality in southern El Hierro covering approximately 85 km², characterised by extensive pine forests (Pinus canariensis) that give the area its name. The municipality includes the coastal village of La Restinga — the southernmost settlement in Spain and Europe — and the main town of El Pinar with approximately 1,800 residents. The area features the El Julan archaeological zone, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve site containing over 100 rock carvings (petroglyphs) left by the pre-Hispanic Bimbache people, accessible via guided tours. The pine forest of El Pinar is the largest on the island and plays a crucial role in water capture from the trade wind clouds (horizontal rain).
