Valverde
The capital of El Hierro, located at approximately 600m elevation on the northeastern slope of the island, home to approximately 5,000 residents. Uniquely among Canary Islands capitals, Valverde has no direct coastal access — the port at Puerto de la Estaca lies 7 km below. The town is concentrated around the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción (18th century) and the modern Cabildo (island government) building. Valverde functions as the island's administrative and commercial centre with supermarkets, banks, the main health centre, and government offices. The town offers views across to Tenerife and La Palma on clear days. It is the only Canarian capital not built on the coast.
