La Frontera

A municipality covering the western half of El Hierro, including the fertile El Golfo valley — a massive semi-circular depression formed by the island's main volcanic collapse approximately 50,000 years ago. The valley features the island's main agricultural area producing pineapples, bananas, figs, and wine under the El Hierro DO. The town centre of Sabinosa is known for its thermal health spa (Pozo de la Salud) with mineral waters used since the 19th century. The Mirador de la Peña — designed by César Manrique — offers spectacular views over the entire valley. The area includes the Punta de Orchilla lighthouse, historically the "end of the world" (Meridiano Cero) before the Greenwich meridian was adopted.
